Are you a driving instructor who would like to offer the Safer Drivers Course to your learner driver students? Or are you thinking about partnering with a Safer Drivers Course Facilitator to offer this course together?
The ADTA is currently looking for new driving instructors to become ADTA Safer Drivers Course Coaches and Coach/Facilitators so we can expand our growing list of Safer Drivers Course locations across greater Sydney, the Newcastle area and the Port Macquarie area.
But, what exactly is the ADTA Safer Drivers Course? And how do you become an ADTA Safer Drivers Course Coach or Coach/Facilitator?
The NSW Safer Drivers Course
Designed to contribute to improved road safety outcomes for young learner drivers below the age of 25, the NSW Safer Drivers Course is an initiative of the NSW State Government and it is quite different to a traditional driving lesson.
There are two modules in the 5 hour Safer Drivers Course, delivered over two sessions:
MODULE ONE - an in-class 3-hour group discussion with other learners. This component of the course can be delivered by a Safer Drivers Course Facilitator or Coach.
MODULE TWO – an in-car 2-hour practical session with two learner drivers and one driving Instructor. This component of the course can only be delivered by a Safer Drivers Course Coach.
Students need to have completed at least 50 logbook hours of actual driving (not the 3-for-1 bonus hours) before taking the Safer Drivers Course and upon successful completion of the course they will receive 20 logbook hours for completing the 5-hour course.
ADTA Safer Drivers Course – Coach and / or Facilitation Training
Driving instructors can choose to become either a Safer Drivers Course Coach/Facilitator (teaching Modules One and Two) or simply a Safer Drivers Course Coach (teaching Module One).
To deliver the entire ADTA Safer Drivers Course yourself (Module One and Module Two) you’ll need to complete BOTH the Safer Drivers Course Facilitator one-day course and the Safer Drivers Course Coach one-day course.
If you would prefer to just teach the in-car Module Two, you only need to complete the Safer Drivers Course Coach one-day course. However you’ll need to partner with an approved facilitator who has passed the Safer Drivers Course Facilitator one-day course to deliver the ADTA Safer Drivers Course.
Facilitation Training
This course qualifies driving instructors to deliver the in-class Module One of the ADTA Safer Drivers Course.
To enrol in our Safer Drivers Course Facilitator one-day course you will need:
- at least one year’s experience in facilitation prior to attending the course
- a current NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- a Cert IV TAE 40110 or higher in Training & Assessment
You don’t have to be a driving instructor to take the Facilitator Training course.
Coach Training
This course qualifies you to deliver the in-car Module Two of the ADTA Safer Drivers Course.
- To enrol in our Safer Drivers Course Coach one-day course you will need:
- a current NSW Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- a current NSW Driver Instructor’s Licence (Cert IV in Training & Logistics)
- a current NSW Driver Licence, and
- at least one year industry experience as a licensed instructor.
Don’t have the Cert IV TAE 40110 (or higher) in Training & Assessment?
If you’re a driving instructor who doesn’t have the Cert IV TAE 40110 (or higher) in Training & Assessment that is required to teach Module One of the Safer Drivers Course, you can still teach Module Two of the ADTA Safer Drivers Course.
Completing the ADTA Safer Drivers Course Coach one-day course qualifies you to teach Module Two of the Safer Drivers Course in partnership with a qualified approved facilitator (who doesn’t have to be a driving instructor) who will deliver Module One.
