Event Highlights BIG DAY OUT 2026
On Thursday 15 October, at Rydges Parramatta, we welcomed Heavy Vehicle members from across NSW for our special Big Day Out — a bonus event held as part of our annual Main Conference program.
Delivered as a full-day session, the program featured important industry updates, insights from key government representatives, and a forward look at upcoming changes within the Heavy Vehicle Training and Assessment sector.
Take a look at our highlights below.
Guest Speakers
Alex Peterson
Transport for NSW
Alex, one of the frontline compliance officers, offered real-world insights from recent audit findings. These included both administrative oversights and serious breaches, such as instructors operating without valid licences. His presentation underscored the importance of compliance and the role it plays in maintaining industry integrity. These findings will help shape ADTA's future education resources.
Perry Bishara
Zurich Insurance
Perry focused on automation complacency. Drawing on his experience as a Senior Risk Engineer, Perry delivered a compelling session on modern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
He discussed the technology challenges, human factors, interface problems, urban driving, and insurance view.
He finished off with a simple statement: "The answer is not less technology; the goal should be better integration of people with vehicles."
Bourne De-Belin
Jim Pearson Transport
Bourne highlighted the increasing importance of electronic work diaries.
What's changed since the integration of going digital?
Daily entries + work/rest totals recorded electronically, automatic time + location capture, better visibility of work/rest, pre-breach warnings: 1 hour, then 15-minute intervals, less physical paperwork.
The change is bigger than replacing a page with a screen. It changes how information moves through the business.
Denis Gracie
ADTA Director
Denis provided a valuable session around the Driver Ability Road Test(DART). Denis discussed the history of the test, the current requirements, and how to manage and prepare drivers for the test.
Mick Humphries
ADTA Director
Mick delivered a highly practical and insightful session focused on creating meaningful professional development within training businesses. He outlined approaches for identifying instructor skill gaps, structuring effective learning pathways, and embedding continuous improvement into daily operations. Mick emphasised the importance of relevant, engaging, and measurable PD activities that strengthen instructor capability, enhance business performance, and ultimately improve learner outcomes across the industry.
John Kenyon
Austroads
We welcome back John Kenyon who introduced a national program currently in development that aims to achieve true harmonisation of driver licensing across Australia.
He provided an update of the NHVDFC program, shared forward-thinking concepts and the potential benefits of a consistent licensing pathway nationwide. John also challenged traditional thinking around tenure and driver progression, actively seeking feedback from attendees to take back to his team.

Why Professional Development Matters
In the heavy vehicle industry, staying up to date isn’t just about skill—it's about safety, efficiency, and compliance.
Ongoing professional development (PD) helps drivers sharpen their knowledge, improve on-road performance, and stay ahead of industry changes. For those in NSW, PD is a legal requirement set by Transport for NSW, ensuring drivers maintain high standards and meet regulatory obligations.
Whether it's understanding new road laws, refining driving techniques, or improving business operations, investing in PD keeps you competitive, compliant, and on the road with confidence.
